Our Story

Hi there,

My name is Adheema Davis, and welcome to Moon - my answer to regaining agency over your holistic well-being, one decadent treat at a time. I am trained professionally as an Architect, and have worked in the built environment and as an academic, lecturing, writing, and presenting on themes ranging from apartheid spatialities, gender, architectural heritage, preservation of food across the diaspora, landscape and memory, and decolonisation for the last decade. I am a civic leader and impassioned radical optimist who believes that justice is what love looks like in public. As a woman of colour, I have also lived with the inherent trust in home remedies to heal, and have had a disciplined yoga practice for over 12 years. And, I am proud to say, that I am the founder of Moon - South Africa's first seed cycling and dark chocolate holistic health treat company.

Moon products are made in small batches, using the finest, ethically sourced, GMO free ingredients that are Halaal, Vegetarian, and Vegan. Its not just a product range, but a feeling. I say this because it is deeply personal and at the origins of how Moon began, as a journey toward healing myself and addressing the stress and toxicity of environments around me.

Here's a bit more of our (Moon and my) story...

Two years ago, my life was a little different, I was making waves in a very niche profession with exclusionary foundations and working for a university, as a young woman in the body that I have with a critical head, heart, and cheeky tongue - working also entailed experiencing workplace bullying and harassment for being present, enthusiastic, and exceeding expectations in my performance management reviews. Making use of opportunities to promote education and do my best was a problem for the men around me who had mastered failing forward, and saw my inability to remain quietly in a box that they wished to label as threatening - so sought instead to discredit and remove me rather than support my progress as for us all.

I recall looking at the cocktail of capsules and tablets in my palm one morning, a myriad of supplements for inflammatory symptoms, endurance, and cognitive performance. Stress in a toxic environment had wrecked havoc on my body - fluctuating periods with raging PMS, IBS, low levels of iron and vitamin D, anxiety, chronic sinusitis, migraine, and cervical spasms. And I couldn't stomach it any longer. I knew instinctively that there was a better way. I wanted to not just solve my problems, but to regain agency over my well-being - health, appearance, environment, and purpose. My family knows that I love to know things, to read, to research, and in this case, that's what I did. I south to find a way toward effortless effort in a life of truth.

I discovered superfoods - ingredients that when combined could not only address my concerns, but enrich every season and season of life. I learned about seed cycling to regulate your menstrual cycle and support inflammatory illness through their ability to listen and adapt your changing body. I learned that dark chocolate is amazing - much like the ancient Mayans believed...just not the bit about human sacrifice! The principles of holistic healing through food was not unfamiliar to me - Ayurveda, Tayyib, Unani, Traditional Chinese Medicine - however you wish to name it, teaches us about taking hold of our health by consciously considering what we put into our bodies. At this part of my journey through womanhood, I found being grounded and connected to the earth as an empowering experience, and I wanted that not just for myself, but for us all. Something rich, yet simple enough to add to our daily lives. Along with seeking support for the legal and emotional aspects of my then stressful situation, I started incorporating these principles into my life.

After a few months, I started noticing the improvements and shared my knowledge and collection of treats with my girlfriends and family, and quickly realised that I was onto something. We all crave that something that can allow us to centre our womanhood with joy, something that connects us, and because we live in this capitalist world, something that can easily fit into our jam-packed schedules. It feels like these past two years have simultaneously dragged on and passed by in a flash, but my life and well-being are a far cry from where I began - I am the healthiest and happiest and I have ever been, embracing this season of slowing down with care, and support.

And so, Moon was born, not just as a range of functional health support, but as a feeling - a deliciously chocolatey one at that!
